These are St Andrew's Cross spiders and it turns out I have lots of them in my front garden. I was trimming my hedge and found about 18 of them with webs or hiding in the hedge. Most retained their residency but about 1/2 got relocated to my garden waste bin because they wouldn't surrender their branch.
