When environmentally friendly turns into corporate marketing.

It's one thing to be environmentally friend, but it's another to try
and name your productions, or coin a new phrase by packaging your
products with a slogan to try and sell things better. "Green Ethernet"
is the latest one that I have stumbled onto. My old linksys switch
died and I needed a new one, I normally order these things online, but
I was at our new Dicksmith powerhouse shop and decided to see if they
had any. They did and it was a reasonable price so I got it. It wasn't
until I got it home that I noticed that it is "Green Ethernet". Their
claim is they use 44% less power. But there is a huge (*) on the claim
and that is "Green Ethernet Technology reduces the consumption of by
automatically detecting the length of attached ethernet cable and the
on/off status of connected devices. When compared to conventional
switches, the Green Ethernet DGS-1005 uses up to 44% less energy when
connected devices are switched off, and up to 27% less energy under
normal computer usage of 10 hours per day when connected via 20 meter
ethernet cables."

So what I get out of that, is if you have huge runs of cables and
don't turn on your computers, it'll save you 44%. Otherwise it's just
a switch.
